Ajax fans were reportedly shocked when Ajax's deal with Abn Amro ended, resulting in a new, horizontal sponsor on the front of their shirts. In stepped Aegon, a financial services company to fill the iconic void. And to be honest, the new logo is the only thing that is really definitively different on the new Ajax home shirt. Once again Adidas is the manufacturer, with the traditional red and white design obviously still in place. And again the adidas stripes are not present on the shoulders. Not exactly spectacular - one for the Ajax fans only I feel.
While the home kit has a certain degree of charm thanks to the recycling of the traditional design every year without fail, the 08/09 away kit does not possess many redeeming features. The shirt is basically royal blue with white adidas stripes on the shoulder, with sponsor and club badges in all-white on the front of the shirt. If it would have been left like that, then the result may have been a simple but relatively stylish shirt. However, with the addition of the dark blue under0arm patches and collar lining, the shirt's appearance is certainly diminished. The dark blue section looks tacky, and so effectively ruins what could have been a nice all-royal blue shirt.
